Controversial Ground Zero shall yet soar

As the soaring bird-like design for his World Trade Center PATH station has been endlessly pared down over the years due to budget concerns and other troubles at Ground Zero, Santiago Calatrava has maintained his cool—happily redesigning signature elements to trim costs and repeatedly telling reporters what an honor it is just to be involved. But New York Times architecture critic Nicolai Ouroussoff feels Calatrava's pain and goes to bat for the Spanish starchitect, using the unveiling of a new model of the revised design to praise Calatrava's skill and problem-solving while shredding pretty much everything else about the project—including its placement at the WTC (creating too long of a connection to the MTA's Fulton Transit Center), the excessive retail added to the Grand Central-inspired underground "Great Hall," the forced tweaks to the design and the overall limited use of the station. Calatrava doesn't come away completely unscathed, with Ouroussoff criticizing the limited number of entries and the fact that there's no way to get to the street directly from the train platforms, but in the end Ouroussoff pins the blame on forces greater than Calatrava. The "seeds of the design's failure were there from the very beginning," he writes, and the PATH station just "reinforces the likelihood that one day, decades from now, when the site is finally completed, it will stand as a testament to our inability to put self-interests aside in the face of one of America’s greatest tragedies."

The existing architecture dictates the shapes and elements, but is the details that make the dream a reality. All the unexpected repetitions of a theme add visual power and interest. These elements can be adapted from other areas of the surrounding rooms, be it the diamond basket weave motif of the frosted glass panels or similar wood trims or finishes. Perhaps the shapes that evoke sensual curves on a counter top invite the guests and homeowner to become one with the space, allowing for traffic flow to be second nature.

We're building a modern-style home that will include a fireplace. It's not the standard kind that's placed against a wall but will instead be situated between the living room and dining room and visible from both. What sort of mantel would be appropriate with such a fireplace?

When high-tech entrepreneur Matthew Hill designed his condo in Lansing, Mich., he wanted decor to reflect his personality and "pretty wild lifestyle."

California-based Motoart had what he was after. They buy up junked aircraft -- everything from WWII fighter planes to modern jet parts -- and transform them into furniture: desks, tables, even sofas. Hill opted for a coffee table devised from a section of a C-119 cargo plane.

"I wanted something with a real edge that spoke to the influence of ultra-lounge atmosphere, as well as pure modernism," says Hill, who founded a company called Liquid Web.

Call it industrial chic. Furniture and accessories this year are flaunting their rivets, welds and obvious mechanical origins.

Interior designers are making liberal use of vintage components. While many pieces are sleek, almost aerodynamic, others emphasize the drama of scale -- think gigantic kleig-like floor fixtures, factory work tables or Hill's coffee table.

Industrial-style furnishings aren't new. Marcel Breuer and other Modernists in the early 20th century embraced the idea that man and machine could coexist. Mass production techniques and new materials excited these designers, who sought innovative ways to adapt them for the home. It was a marriage of purpose and aesthetics.

The retro trend is advancing throughout the home furnishings marketplace. A wave of commercial-grade trash bins, bread boxes, toasters and other kitchen accouterments has come ashore, at pricepoints high and low.

"You can't bring a pal from Chicago or anywhere else who is not going to know Washington enough to be your adviser." And consider the budget. Congress appropriates money for the furniture and decor of the residence. The budget -- allocated once every four years -- was set at $100,000 for President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush. But there can be some leeway in the allotment. "If there's something the president wants that will improve the building or the grounds, the budget can be stretched," Baldridge said.

Obama's daughters -- 10-year-old Malia and 7-year-old Sasha -- will have the same bedrooms occupied by John F. Kennedy's children, John and Caroline, and the Bush twins, Jenna and Barbara. "It's the White House, it's a home, it's a museum and it's a place of work, but it is going to be a home for the Obama girls and they certainly can have some fun at their residence," Sally McDonough, special assistant to the president and director of communications, told FOX News. "The girls can certainly add their own personal touch if their mother and father say that is OK," McDonough said. "I'm sure they'll have wonderful rooms," added Baldridge. "They can use all that furniture in the storage house, including four-poster beds for young girls."

The president and first lady also have the authority to restore more public spaces like the State Dining Room, which has seated royalty, including Queen Elizabeth II, and almost every head of state. "The White House used to be very bland and stuffy and unexciting, and Jackie changed the lighting in the dining room," Baldridge said. "The original painters had painted the walls in three shades of white and suddenly there was all this light ceiling and light molding that nobody had ever seen before." Kennedy also introduced new color schemes to the White House, Baldridge said. "It was revolutionary...it was just a fairyland," she said.

Perhaps the most sacred room is the Oval Office -- the president's formal workspace -- where the decor is most carefully considered in characterizing the background and personality of each president. Each president designs a rug bearing the Presidential Seal.

White House recreation rooms -- like the movie theater and bowling alley -- might also see a change or two when the Obamas move in. In an interview in June with comic Jimmy Kimmel, Obama joked about his less-than-impressive bowling skills, saying, "So we're getting rid of the bowling alley and replacing it with a basketball court in the White House." Such dramatic changes are not unprecedented.

"The Kennedys created a magnificent swimming pool, and then President Nixon took it out and painted it over," Baldridge said. Another piece of advice from Baldridge to the Obamas: "Develop a strong skin. You're always going to have people screaming and shouting no matter what you do, and therefore you have to have a strong point of view and be able to defend your decisions."

A bare 35 foot long hall gets a makeover and comes through with a warm and appealing personality. Custom-designed open columns and ledge serve as the break in the lengthy unending feeling this hallway suffered from. The double bridge-like columns were strategically placed as to break up the linear feel. The distressed mirror adds light and further enhances the papyrus on the river rock filled bud vases, which are two elements that help bring nature to a space without natural light. The dark espresso finish on the woodwork offer a contrast with the light colored walls and act as the balancing point for the home-owner's own artwork, which was relocated to the hallway.

This transitional space which serves as the main circulation space between the public and private spaces of this residential condominium in Aventura was a key element to the design of the entire home, as it is the main axis and sits right off the main entry doors. The palm leaf motif screening on canvas and the bamboo stalk rug add further natural elements to the space.

Over the last few years, the backyard living concept has evolved from a deck or patio area with a pool to true outdoor living spaces complete with full kitchens, eating, sitting and living areas. With this rise in the popularity of outdoor living spaces, it's no surprise that outdoor structures such as gazebos, arbors, trellises, pergolas are also more in demand. "People aren't looking for a simple outdoor space anymore. They're thinking in terms of defining spaces with walls, ceilings and roofs, but only in an open sense to blend with the outdoors," says Ernie Sears, president and owner of Backyard America in Virginia. Sears began his business as a building contractor specializing in outdoor structures, but since 1998 has been providing design services and fabricating kits for customers all over the country. "Pergolas have really taken off over the last few years," says Sears.

Likewise, Michael Mendelsohn, owner of Mendelsohn Construction in Scottsdale, Ariz., is also seeing his business grow as a result of more outdoor structures. "Every home I'm doing, we're enlarging the back patio areas — even after the plans are done. People want more multi-use living centers with TVs and full kitchens."

Most outdoor structures are some sort of variation or combination of a deck, patio, pergola, arbor, trellis or gazebo, and sometimes they may be of a custom design or even go by different names to reflect their function or region of the country (lanai, palapa, veranda). "These structures are all about expanding use," says Sears. "People want to get more useful hours per day and more useful days per year from the outdoor living spaces."

The same basic principles of design and construction apply as to the outdoor structures as it does the main house: use materials and design similar to those of the home to blend the two structures, make sure you follow all codes — especially those regarding setbacks and electrical/gas hookups, and choose materials and build carefully so that the structure will stand up to the elements. Where wind load is a concern, like it is in Florida, the structure needs to be properly anchored to the ground.

Arched window coverings

Arched windows are a delight -- until you try to cover them. More so when you are working on bedroom decor and blackout will be a necessity. I follow suit to the architectural details of a home, working to enhance such details adds layers to the focal point of the design. On this white dining room the drapery rod's carved crest draws the eye to gracefully arched window. Yet since the dining rooms sits on the street side of the home the draperies are fully drawn when privacy is wanted. The faux sheer curtain is an effect created to add more light and is sewn on the leading edges of the blackout drapery to lighten the look.

In this Florida room the main focal point was the two-story high arched window. A curved rod follows the shape of the arch further accenting the unique detail. For a bedroom a curved cornice can also cover the top portion of the window with a drape drawn behind.

The curved cornice follows suit to the architecture while providing full blackout for sleeping. Choose like colors for the drapes as for the walls thus allowing the light to shine throughout the room. Dark colored drapes often soak the light make it harsher on the eye to accept the contrast of light and dark.
Further, blending a variety of same tone hues creates an illusion of grandeur when space is limited which is the original intent of the arched window.

ME Barcelona opens this July

ME by Meliá, a hotel line that integrates modern design and fusion cuisine, will add a fourth property to its roster on July 22: the ME Barcelona. This will be the second ME property in Spain, following the opening of the ME Madrid in October 2006. The ME Barcelona is in the Innovation District, a waterfront business park that houses about 200 international companies — many of them technology-related — and is near the convention center. Highlights of the 259-room hotel include the 24th-floor restaurant, Dos Cielos, which has 360-degree views of the mountains and the Mediterranean (a rooftop garden will provide the restaurant with fresh herbs and other ingredients). There is also a pool on the sixth-floor terrace, along with two night life spots: the Chocolate Bar and the Penthouse Pool Lounge. Nightly rates start at 200 euros, or about $322 at $1.61 to the euro.
Personal Tip. Keeping up with trends and design practices can be and is, indeed a full-time job. On the one hand you must take the CEU's to keep you license in 'current' status, thus a chore. On the other having the choices of what to attend not only keeps you informed but let's you hone in and tap into resources you did not have before. I have been approached in several occasions regarding my interest in becoming an expert witness in several design-related cases. While I must admit that attending any courtroom for whatever the reason is about as appealing as getting a root canal, the CEU I attended this evening on 'becoming an expert witness' has opened my eyes in fearing not the process but actually finding it quite educational in nature. I have provided affidavits before and even referred colleagues for their experience, yet, now I further understand that my experience is what I bring to the table. Being able to listen, learn and offer an impartial, unbiased opinion on subjects that I am passionate about, and so versed in that it comes natural, is one more way I can further my value to the profession.

Must-see TV. Upfront and center as the new focal point in the main room.

Never mind that many designers will cringe at the sight of exposed sets in living rooms, especially those prominently displayed. That opinion is so widely held among designers that some don't even like seeing TVs in plain sight even in more casual family rooms. But slim, sleek, flat-panel screens are changing our interior landscapes. This is particularly true for young people. They are very electronic in their thought processes, so the design for the main room's focal point is shifting. "I have a penthouse that is soft, modern and sleek. The fireplace isn't fussy. And the TV is so contemporary, it's almost like another piece of art," says Davis, a real estate broker.

Some designers find themselves resisting client pressure to show off the TV. "Not in a formal living room," Washington designer Lori Graham says. "I am a purist in that regard." She is putting a set in one living room grudgingly, she says, quickly adding, "It was a loft-like space whose style is much more modern and eclectic." Even there the TV is mounted in a grid of shelving.

"I will not ever put one over a fireplace," declares D.C. designer Susan Vallon. "It is a traditionally warm gathering place and focal point, and you are negating the whole thing by putting a TV there. I would rather have people drywall over the fireplace and remove it as a center of attention."

Rather than being so dramatic as to drywall over a major architectural feature we understand the need of our clients to want the option of occasional entertainment when they would enjoy a TV in their living room and above their fireplace. Be it New Years and your guests want to see the ball drop or the yearly football/Thanksgiving dinner... Finding 'designer-acceptable' solutions is more challenging than trying to swim against flow.

Some might find the color blue a cold choice for a bedroom. Yet blue in its many shades evokes nightfall, sky and water. More commonly used for boys bedrooms, in the master it has a grand effect. It is like being on vacation every night. When paired with white the contrast offers a calming effect. The same goes for the use of patterns versus solid tones, the combination keeps the eye interested on the patterned fabrics while offering a soothing rest with the solid hues. The choice of accent pieces from art murals to accessories add the finishing touches and further emphasize the desired effect. MSNBC /Forbes Traveler (3/25, Grant) reported, "Spain is hot," and its "hip hotels" are becoming "destinations in their own right." At Madrid's Hotel Puerta America, a $94-million, 342-room property, "the focus on design reaches is apotheosis," with "each of its 12 guestroom floors...designed by a different high-profile architect or designer." The "difference between floors is nothing short of extreme," because there was "no limit in the budget or in the use of color or materials." Another of Madrid's hip hotels is Oscar, part of the Room Mate Hotels brand owned by Enrique Sarasola. There, "hipness is surprisingly inexpensive," at about 100 euros per night. The same is true in Barcelona, where the Casa Camper is "a living experiment in eco-chic hospitality," with "bicycles hanging from the lobby's ceiling" for guests. In the Eixample quarter, Hotel Axel is "spare but chic." And, (pictured) in the Rioja wine region, "Frank Gehry continues his architectural conquest of Iberia with the jarring Hotel Marques de Riscal in Elciego." in memoriam of George J. Berlin; beloved dad and grandpa

On Sunday, March 16th, our dad, George Joshua Berlin passed on at the age of 85, following a week of simcha with all his family and friends who gathered to celebrate his youngest daughter's wedding. He is survived by his wife of nearly 57 years, Lila, his four children and ten grandchildren.
Born in Brooklyn, Dad grew up in Miami Beach and Elmont, and was graduated from Miami Beach High. He studied engineering at Case Western Reserve, where he was a member of the same fraternity to which his grandson now belongs. During WWII, he served in Guam as a Naval officer in the Construction Battalion (CeeBee’s); it should come as no surprise that Dad built the synagogue for the base on Guam. He will be missed by all, for whom he served as a role model, mentor, and teacher. We Love you, dad!

Cancer centers are quickly evolving into symbols of medical prestige and excellence. Driven by an unfortunately growing market of patients, institutions are busily bringing in experienced designers to turn these sterile, medical environments into homey, relaxing settings. Consequently, things like natural materials, full spectrum lighting, warm woods, nicer finishes, natural light, soothing colors, aquariums, and fireplaces are headlining the spec sheets of architects and interior designers.
“Patients want to be reminded of the good things in life,” this being the case, inspirational-type spaces such as “healing gardens,” water features, atriums and outside views are key. Connecting cancer patients to nature has been proven to be a powerful component of healing. In addition, with patients spending extended periods of time for treatment inside the facility, as well as returning for multiple visits, it is important to provide cancer patients with control of their environment and to incorporate positive distractions into the design, for example, artwork, colors, patterns, and unique murals lighting ceiling panels.

The Interpretation
1.5 oz. Smirnoff blueberry vodka
.5 oz Frangelico
1 splash of dry vermouth
1 strawberry, muddled with 1/4oz. pure maple syrup
1 splash of cream or half & half
Combine the ingredients in a shaker with ice. Strain the mixture into a chilled martini glass with a nutmeg and sugar rim.
For a lactose-free variation substitute the cream with a splash of fresh lemon juice. Serve on the rocks with either club soda or (my favorite) Champagne.

REGREEN: Guidelines For Sustainable Residential Remodeling and Renovation

The Strategy Library offers suggestions on the greenest alternatives. This is, perhaps, the heart of REGREEN, offering more than 200 (and growing) green design tactics. They are listed by the familiar and proven LEED categories—innovative design process, sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality. Browsing the table of contents will help users locate a specific strategy but also alert them to other related opportunities.

An important aspect of REGREEN, its focus on whole-house, systems thinking. It is rarely a single product or building component or even a collection of attributes that result in a building being labeled green. Green building is almost always about how systems . . . work together to reduce environmental impacts.

REGREEN is still a work in progress and its next iteration is up to you. ASID and USGBC have posted the draft version of the guidelines and invite the public to comment. http://www.regreenprogram.org USGBC will respond to all comments, and post the comments and responses (without commenter names or organizations) online on the same site. Another year gone by, ... marked by the passing of thanksgiving...
In contrast with other years past, I managed to squirm my way out of hosting this years dinner, so in light of that and in a futile attempt to plan ahead I actually played hookie on Wednesday to spend the better part of the day shopping and cooking up a storm, to bring over my delightful sister's home.

Thus, on Thanksgiving day we spent the day with the boys and grandpa at Miami's New Jungle Island. We are truly blessed and thankful!

Before, during and after...

While most clients love to enjoy the fabulous interiors we create, I believe that most designers love to live in the 'during' phase.
Personally, as a designer, I enjoy the process the most. Not the final product when I have to turn the project over to it's rightful owner, but the construction phase where I get to inject my most creative flow. Final cut decisions happen on the job and being able to feel the beat of the project as it develops is something I crave.
While I use highly sophisticated CADD and 3D rendering tools to put our ideas down and present the client with a photographic image of what's to come, the thrill comes from seeing one's concepts develop in front of your very eyes. An interior design remodeling project is a breathing, live endeavor. The dynamic nature of a job under construction result in real-life solutions for a better outcome and can only evolve and mature while on the job.

Of the 30 invitations across my desk this weekend, the new term of choice is ECO-friendly.
This particular company sells gorgeous artisan enhanced wood accessories and furniture all which are true conversation and conservation pieces.

Examples shown are elegantly handmade by craftsmen who are best described as artists. Some pieces are made from wood that is over 300 years old. The wood is often found in old barns, decaying bridges, reforestation areas, and rare tree trunks found at the bottom of rivers.

Perhaps the absence of all color is the attraction itself. Perhaps the idea of the food and wine coloring the environment or better yet the people themselves and all their garments will change the design on a daily basis.

That's it a truly dynamic interior one that changes qualities and color much like a chameleon. There is a play on textures, sheens and shapes. Geometric shapes superimpose one another, vertical elements draw the eye upward while the lighting highlights yet another blanc wall.

White on white, pristine yet inviting. One can hear the noisy voices and laughter even when the room is vacant. A breathing interior whose soul is a vibrant when occupied as when it quietly awaits.

Madrid: classical architecture

Architecture in my native country is totally taken for granted. Civilians walk everyday by these magnificent sites which take a tourist to be pointing their camera in a direction for their eye to notice the frieze detail on a landmark.

As much as the young generations scream for modern architectural elements and interiors, the very foundation and total attraction in a city of yesteryear is the reminder of past civilizations.

As if such historical conquests gave birth to this gorgeous city. Sure there are arches of triumph to commemorate the victories, but long after the battles were won, the triumph rest on the opulent carvings, statues of galloping horses and ornate balconies, so well lit they command attention to the passerby.

A little Italy: La Murrina

Larger than life, the Trojan horse has taken residence at FAO Schwartz in Las Vegas' Caesar's Palace. Children and adults alike can actually climb inside and feel the grandiosity of this 3-stories high wooden sculpture. Yet another example of grand scale in Vegas.

Everywhere you turn one feels like Alice in wonderland after being shrunk down to fit through the keyhole. Furniture consoles and accessories found at the Wynn can be seen in such enormous proportions that are no longer functional but strictly decorative.

On this 9/11 (my eldest's half birthday, his birthday 3/11 falls on the Atocha terrorist attack in Madrid) we shall remember the victims, the heroes and the unsung heroes who gave it their all. Time for Oneself

Finding the right balance between work and pleasure has been a total challenge for me. Most people I know are completely able to take the time to enjoy themselves. Sure I too go to dinners with friends and family, enjoy my kids activities and escape to the gym. Yet recently when I was asked to actually jot down 3 things that I do for myself and enjoy (and by that I don't mean getting a manicure or a massage) I mean truly love to do it and never get to it. I actually have a hard time with this concept. As if, if I am not working I OUGHT to be taking care of someone, ie. kids, family members and all their needs, hubby, working out... yada, yada, yada....
Those friends of mine who often go out to girl's night outs, that couple that takes dancing lessons, and I don't know the extend of activities out there, they make me feel that I am playing hookie at work.
Truly I am beginning to sound and feel like a work-o-holic. Yet, I feel energized by the many on-going projects as if they give me a rush of adrenaline.... good or bad? not sure, balance lifestyle: no way.

Reaching for the stars

The power of staying in touch in invaluable. Just recently I found myself looking for a professional photographer for a design award competition we wanted to enter. The project merit the artistic touch and eye of the best quality. For years I have admired the work of one of the best architectural photographers in Florida (Dan Forer) and simply thought of him as "inaccessible" or photographer to the stars.

Why? Well, I have always seen his work published in the best National design magazines and featuring the interiors of some of the peers I admire. Well, I thought his rates would just be out of reach.

Much to my surprise an email came from his office just weeks prior to a design contest deadline. A simple email showing their latest work and offering their services to designers. This was G-d sent, the perfect opportunity to strike gold! If his email was in any way indicating that he was looking to expand his client base or it may suggest that he has some available time, I could find myself bargaining for a great deal. Lucky for me he was receptive and he agreed to a rate within my budget.

Meeting him was quite amazing too and seeing him at work was even better. He and his finely-tuned team moved through the day in perfect harmony as if dancing to a silent Minuet, while creating art from my own creation.

Mission accomplished!

To those who fear those they admire, best to join forces and take a step for grandness. Thank you Dan for allowing me to showcase my creation in your best light!

South for the Winter

The client’s wish list was clear but extensive. Biggest wish was for their new Southern ocean view condo to reflect the feel of their Northern home. These native Northerners shared a homebody lifestyle: a love for reading, collecting Native American artifacts, entertaining and watching television. After enjoying dinner in the open dinning room, the guests required many spaces for conversation, thus, came the evolution for the layout.
The great room needed to provide a good balance between the different areas, with ample space for circulation, while still enjoying the entire room’s energy. The juxtaposition of the fine custom cabinetry versus the cozy chenille fabric on the sofa results in a warm, homey feeling. The bar area offers a quiet corner to sip a good Scotch while playing chess. Adjacent to the bar is a pair of antique high-back chairs, with their whimsy contrast color fabrics, great for cocooning by the fireplace. Across the room the double stuffed wing back chairs are perfect for reading and conversation.

The most challenging element was the coffered lighting soffit. General, mood and task lighting are all housed in it. A Xenon lamp bright strip, hidden along the perimeter crown, sets the mood with a soft glow. Further, the color selections were set in shades derived from Nature, wheat tones contrasting fern greens. Lastly, the main focal point is the large wall unit, housing the fireplace, art collection and the remote-controlled hidden plasma screen, seen when you want it, gone when you don’t. “Here’s looking at you kid”.

Classic, elegant and inviting is how this great room feels.

Knowing when to barter, or whom to work for pro-bono has proven effective once again.
I am a member of several charitable organizations and participating in Designer Showhouses poses not only a challenge to the designer mind, but always proves to be profitable in countless ways, aside from the satisfaction gained from doing a 'mitzvah' or acts of charity.
In this case the non-for-profit organization: Aventura Marketing Council - asked me to design their new office at One Aventura Executive Center, a 'green' office is called for, as they are the leaders in the Aventura Business Community.
They must set an example for future generations when they consider design elements which are friendly to the environment. Everything from wallpaper to carpet, furniture and even acoustical ceiling tiles has been approved by the USBGC as being manufactured in a ecologically friendly facility. Designing green is not the way of the future is very much the way of TODAY and it does not pose in any circumstance an increase to the budget.

Glass walls: an inside look

The biggest culprit in most offices are those interior rooms which have no windows. Our craving for sunlight during our workday is as imperative as oxygen to our lungs. Aside from the cultural hierarchy classification that offices with windows affords each partner and employee, the need to filter natural light throughout the office poses a challenge. Aside from the fact that we now can specify daylight corrected light bulbs which illuminate the room's color closely to natural light, there is the psychological factor of being able to see outdoors.

Hence, glass walls have played an important role in modern offices as the partition of choice.

Conference above is located alongside a window covered wall, yet towards the interior corridor fixed glazing panels infuse the sunlight.

The sales center on the right is situated in the center of a large lobby, the floor-to-ceiling glass panels act as walls providing not just delineation to the space but also an open and inviting feeling to buyers. All the architectural elements from the flooring to the dome in the ceiling follow the disappearing lines of the glass walls, thus reinforcing the perimeter.

In the image below we contrast the open element of a glass wall with an over-scaled photo lamination which creates definition of purpose in the room as well as luring buyers to peek inside and approach the sales center.
Even when the office is closed and the lobby is open after hours, the interior lighting makes for a few onlookers to stop and peek. Oh, and the montage is the talk of the building!

New York, New York

Oh! how we love New York! Specially, it's energy with all it's people walking by. On a typical Saturday morning in the middle of summer, thousands of joggers, walkers and families strolling flod Central Park. Did I mention the sun worshipers? Blankets in tow, bikinis in a row offer a colorful new constrast to the green grass carpet of the many hills in the park. The energy amazing! I sure beckons my inner exercise demon to wake up.

But more so, as we walk from about 96 to 14th street, I can't help from wondering, what would it be like to work as a designer in the city? Sure, I have come up on client shopping trips before (and in the winter too), yet for the daily routine, I find it merely exhausting. I can say I am totally spoiled by the convenience of having the largest design center in my backyard. The DCOTA or the Design Center of the Americas boasts 700,000 sq. ft. of interior design heaven, and while I have personally shopped and visited the two main design centers in the city NYDC and A&D building, I much prefer the all-inclusive DCOTA.

I do however, love the village with all its faboulosly

equiped Italian-styled modern showrooms, or what secret source will pop up every year down by the brewery, but let's not forget the comforts of air-conditioning: a must in Florida and this weekend I will say in New york too.

Craving the outdoors

Happy 4th of July!
As we have just completed the first half of the 2007 year, I find myself reflecting on the interiors of projects recently completed. Being outside so much under the gorgeous (and hot, very hot) South Florida sun, makes me wonder how can we incorporate more of this feeling we get when we are outside (and on vacation - so to speak) in the inside of our workspaces and homes.

In the residential arena the outdoor market has just exploded. But at work, what are we doing to bring the outside in at our hermetically sealed corporate offices? A couple of our current projects are in the newly developed and just CO'd "One Aventura" building. The developer, Mr. Fernando Levy, speaks about the aluminum trellis sun shades that wrap around the perimeter of the each floor and the operable glazing that allows for each suite's natural air flow. This type of architectural elements allow both the designer and the end user to be in touch with the outdoors. Another such element can be achieved in the interior by creating a large photo-montage or mural with an outdoor motif.

Back in the 70's beach scenes were wallpapered in family rooms across America, yet today we find all 'green' elements motifs appearing in conference rooms, waiting areas in medical suites and restaurants. Such motifs evoke anything from images of the rain-forest to snow banks along a river bed all which achieve the desired effect of transporting one's mind to the outdoors: a mini-vacation without the hassle of travel.

Colorado = Nature

Oh! I think this is where the term "Green Design" was coined. Everywhere you look in the summer months in and around Beaver Creek, a green carpet of many colors come to life.

A spectrum of light surprised us as we went to the Rodeo for the kids to play live for the crowds.
This was an unbelievable site: a double rainbow.

Local shops display true artisan craftsmanship with respect for Mother Nature, such as this gorgeous cocktail table with gnarled vine legs.

Inspiration in the Mountains

We, Floridians, like to disappear from Miami in the summer. This year we are taking off for the mountains of Colorado, where the fresh cool air will awaken the senses resulting in new appreciation for the basic colors Mother Nature has to offer.
We are using both our son's violin camp as an excuse for a family gathering. Outdoor intense activities will be perfectly balanced with day long classical violin instruction, so to challenge and feed the mind's every nook.
Happily, once we renew our oxygen content and attempt dare-devil hot-air balloon riding, we will come back to hot South Florida for a season full of challenges and more 'interiors that lift your spirit.'™

A tub with a view

... a fabulous addition/renovation of a zenful master bath ...

South Florida is surrounded by water and being a pisces myself, I totally understood when my client, a lovely British young athlete, wanted nothing more than a jacuzzi with a view.

After an extensive renovation we achieved our goal. Bumping out a mere three feet with a 45º window was the answer to bringing the water from the InterCoastal waterways into her master bath.

Nothing melts your worries better away than a hot bath surrounded by elegant honey-onyx marble, gold plated fixtures and a parade of luxury yatchs in your view.
